Updated: Mar 30, 2023

ITIL 4 is the latest version of the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), a set of best practices for IT service management. ITIL 4 was released in 2019 and provides an updated framework for organizations to manage their IT services and deliver value to their customers. ITIL 4 is designed to help organizations better understand customer needs, improve service delivery, and create a culture of continuous improvement.

ITIL 4 is a successor of ITIL 3. It introduces three key components that are different from the language and structure of previous ITIL versions. These components separate ITIL 4 from previous versions and include the service value system, the four dimensions of service management: people, processes, products, and partners, and the seven guiding principles, designed to help organizations to focus on value, start where they are, progress iteratively with feedback, collaborate and promote visibility, think and work holistically, and keep it and practical.

ITIL 4 is also designed be more customizable and flexible, focusing more on the concepts of costs, outcomes, risks, and value. Additionally, ITIL 4 has 34 practices, which are defined as a set of organizational resources and competencies designed for conducting operations or achieving an objective. This is a significant increase from the core ITIL 2 processes that were present in ITIL 3.

ITIL 4 offers three certification paths and two extension modules. The three paths are the ITIL 4 Foundation, ITIL 4 Managing Professional (ITIL MP) and ITIL 4 Strateg: Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI). The two extension modules are ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support and ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value. To become an ITIL Master, end-learners must complete the ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) and ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL) modules. The ITIL certification path is governed by Axelos, a joint venture between the UK government and Capita plc.
