It was introduced in 2017 as a cloud-based platform for managing the entire SAP software lifecycle and its origin can be traced back to the launch of SAP Cloud Platform in 2017. SAP Cloud Platform was designed to be the designated extension and integration platform for SAP’s entire portfolio, and was the technical foundation for new applications and SAP product lines such as IoT, machine learning, Big Data, and multi-cloud delivery models. SAP Activate was then developed as a next-generation implementation framework based on the Agile methodology, to give customers the freedom to quickly get up and running and continuously innovate with SAP S/4HANA Cloud.
The main components of the SAP Activate methodology include project management, customer team enablement, technical architecture and infrastructure, application design and configuration, extensibility, integration, testing, data management and operations (aka SAP Activate workstreams). Additionally, its framework consists of three pillars: SAP Best Practices, Guided Configurations, and the SAP Activate Methodology itself. The SAP Activate Methodology includes elements such as configuration, documenting the solution, system change management and transport management, data loads and data migration, testing, delivery of training and enablement, managing the project work, extending the solution, and integration.
The key benefits of SAP Activate include reduced project lifecycle, use of SAP Best Practices, up to 10 key deliverables per phase, agile implementation as a default, simplified and streamlined business operations, bypassing complex system configurations, reduced risk, and cost-effectiveness.
